Women don’t automatically lose their sexual interest as they age, according to a new study involving experts at the University of Pittsburgh. The study was presented at the 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

What factors were considered?

More than 3,200 women participated in the new study. Researchers looked at how various factors influence a woman’s interest in sex during the transition to menopause. These factors included, for example, education, partner status, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, menopausal status, hormones, symptoms of depression, perceived stress, use antidepressants, sexual orientation, sexual satisfaction, pelvic pain, vaginal dryness and hot flashes.

A number of studies had previously shown that the importance of sexuality in middle-aged women was strongly correlated with sexual function, the researchers noted. This was also confirmed in the new study and it also became clear how sexuality has changed with the age of women.

Many women still find sex attractive in old age

Based on the data obtained, the research group subdivided three different possibilities for the significance of sex with age. For almost half of women (45%), sex was important at the beginning of average life and gradually lost its importance over time, for 27%, sexual activity was very important throughout average life and for 28%, sex was in the middle of life. Life of little importance. For more than a quarter of women, sex remains very important throughout the average life, the research team points out.

In addition, it has been shown that in the case of symptoms of depression, for example, the probability is greater that the importance of sexuality for women is rather low or decreases. The research team summarizes that it is often treatable reasons, such as vaginal dryness or depression, that can make a woman less interested in sex. Additionally, better sexual satisfaction has been associated with increased sexual interest over time, as has higher education, the researchers point out.
